I love a farmers market.
I look forward to buying what’s in season: flowers in the spring and summer; pumpkins in the fall; cheese, well, anytime (thank goodness). The evolution of the market helps me better tune into the cycle of the seasons—and appreciate what’s in, according to nature.
I love supporting local growers and makers. I feel a sense of camaraderie: of the entrepreneurial spirit; of following a passion; of working towards a purpose.
This past weekend marked the first winter farmers market in the City of East Lansing. The culmination of many months of effort (of which I often witnessed first hand) to create a space for the community to socialize safely, while supporting local businesses in the process.
I chatted with one vendor: A dad with two young daughters. Said daughters—despite their devices—were quite vocal about their boredom, but dad didn’t skip a beat when sharing the origins of his business and explaining each product with pride.
I also spoke to a couple who were visiting on a rare Sunday off from work. They said the market presented an opportunity to do something other than stay home. Something safe and socially distanced; something to sustain their mental health and well-being.
I felt that way, too. “It was an event!” I told my friend. “When’s the last time you could go to an event?” I marked it (and all subsequent dates) on my calendar. Having this something new to look forward to gave me a welcome boost.
Farmers markets also help sustain the well-being of local businesses. The vendors at the market are, of course, front and center, but the surrounding businesses benefit from the boost in foot traffic, too.

And while there are still months to go before flowers arrive at the market (and many, many more until pumpkins), I’ll know this on the day(s) they do: the seasons are evolving and, together, we’re making it through.
